Back in September of 2015, Snapchat introduced a new feature called Lenses. Lenses was created for users to have more fun while taking their selfies. Users could choose from a variety of silly, funny or scary Lenses, which changed daily. This feature was originally free, but due to its popularity and high demand, Snapchat created a “Lens Store” — which sold different Lenses for $0.99 each.
Once a Lens was purchased, users owned it forever. If users didn’t purchase a Lens, they were given new Lenses to try every day. The only downside was that - unless they purchased any of them - users never got to keep those "loaner" Lenses for an extended period of time.
Even though initial sales were strong and many users ultimately purchased multiple Lenses, in January 2016, Snapchat made the decision to close the Lens Store for good. Instead, Snapchat now offers a rotating selection of 10 Lenses to all of its users — absolutely free!
In addition, users who grant the application access to their location may also get to use promotional Lenses based on where they are in the world. Promotional Lenses are rapidly gaining in popularity among major brands, marketers, PR professionals, event organizers, and more.
