Facebook's Hottest Features in 2016

Written by Lauren Austin

Facebook is a free social-networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and videos, send messages, and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. A big reason why Facebook is so successful is because of its ability to adapt and anticipate what its users need.

Facebook has been around for 12+ years and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Even with the competition of other social media networks such as Twitter and Snapchat, Facebook works tirelessly to constantly reinvent itself - year in and year out. They have an advantage on their competition because they release new tools and features monthly. Even though this advantage is great for Facebook’s brand,  it does make it difficult for Facebook’s users to keep up with all of the latest updates. Because of that, we’ve prepared an overview of 4 main features you can expect to see on Facebook in 2016.

Facebook's Hottest Features in 2016

Facebook live video

Currently, video engagement is higher on Facebook than any other platform (including YouTube and Instagram). Because of this, Facebook created a live video app that is accessible and user-friendly, and you don’t even need an additional app to use this feature. When using Facebook’s mobile app, the live video tool is located in the “Update Status” prompt. Initially only introduced to public figures in 2015, Facebook is now allowing for a small group of U.S users and verified business pages to test it out. It’s projected to expand in 2016 to more users and brands looking to experiment with live video.  Check out the first live video by Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook Headquarters:

Uber/Lyft integration through Facebook messenger

Facebook messenger allows for you to communicate with all of your friends and share pictures and moments with the click of a button. Recently, Facebook added transportation to messenger to make life a lot easier for its users. You can now request an Uber ride through the Facebook messenger app and a similar integration is expected for Lyft later this year. This new feature allows for you to request a ride from a car service without needing to download another app. Facebook is working to make sure that they provide their users with everything they will ever need - all within one app.

Music stories

Music stories enable better music discovery and sharing by allowing people to listen to music previews on Facebook. The previews are 30-second snippets of music from Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and other sources. Music stories is currently only available for iOS but is expected to be available for desktop soon. Because of the launch of music stories, it has been speculated that Facebook will develop a streaming music product over the next couple of years.

Facebook professional services

Comparable to Yelp and Google reviews, Facebook has now become a recommended engine. Facebook wants their users to check in, tag their location, and now elaborate on their experiences wherever they go. In addition to this, Facebook wants their users to be able to search for specific businesses and receive detailed recommendations from their list of friends. Regarding local businesses, in the past it was nearly impossible to find Facebook pages for local businesses.  Fortunately, people can now easily search for local businesses in their area and discover highly rated businesses.
